The first hour of the Oscar was marked by good execution and mastery of directing the ceremony, and by the fun diversification expected of everyone. The actors' entry and exit to and from the podium was not much different from all previous years, but it was orderly, swift and did not forget a minute of silence for Ukraine's victims
Neither Zelensky appeared on screen to advocate for Ukraine nor actor Sean Penn, Oscare's son-in-law as promised (so far), if the Oscar didn't broadcast a televised speech by the Ukrainian president. The Oscar message in support of Ukraine was not merely to stand silent, but to be accompanied by a addressed speech that begins with a reminder that "the film is an important means for us to express our humanity in times of conflict." Actress Mila Kunis did not mention Ukraine by name on stage when she talked about "recent world events," and how Americans' support for Ukraine in its plight is a duty in place
For Sean Benn (who was not among the nominees for any film), the two Oscars intended to threaten him are about two roles he did earlier. one in 2004 for Mystic River and the other in 2009 for Milk
Otherwise, everything promised an exciting and exciting party, especially as speculation increased that the dog's power weakened and might not win the best film Oscar
Then the surprise occurred in the second half of the concert: Presenter Chris Rock mentioned actress Jada Pinkett Smith in the context of an unsuccessful joke about having to shave her head's hair, saying he expected to see her in the second part of "G.I. Jane." These words excited the actress' husband, Will Smith, and he got up and slapped Chris in the face and returned to his seat. When sitting down, Smith shouted at the stunning comedian, "Let my wife out of your dirty mouth" (not quite "Dirt" but we're not Ward repeating words of slanderous insults)
From here, it seemed as if the Oscars had collapsed, moving from an effective organization to an overall public execution. Yes, awards continued, winners went up and down, applause continued, but the moment Will Smith slapped Chris Rock's face remained in mind and spread a hostile atmosphere
Oscar Best Actor
Will Smith won, as we expected, a Best Actor first Oscar for his role in "King Richard," which revolves around a jealous father over his family and makes sure to prepare his two daughters for tennis games with indomitable determination. In the film there is a reflection of the power of faith and determination that what makes success is family solidarity, whatever the obstacles
This role is Smith's best role in many years. It's an act of faith from the beginning, as the actor bought the real story rights and co-financed the film. And since the movie's commercial premieres started on November th last year, everyone's talking about it's worth winning this year
But with that slap it seemed like it wasn't all that important. Almeidia moved to condemn the violence with which Smith faced a joke, which may have been thick, but it's not really worth it. Smith could have waited for his stage role to respond to the comedian Rock with a few words of reprimand, but maybe he wasn't sure he'd actually be on the stage to deliver the Oscars. When he did, he cried. It was probably the tears of guilt. In his speech, Smith apologized to the Oscars and to the nominees from his colleagues, but he did not apologize to Chris Rock and that was another escalation
But it's the slap that stays in mind and it's not who won in this area or that. Everyone, including Will Smith, who may be years before Hollywood comes to terms with him if he doesn't apologize to his colleague. It's the next few days that will bring the news: Chris Rock refused to file a suit but may change his mind, and Smith may apologize to him in an open speech
And the party that had looked promising, started going down the ladder even by that resounding slap. The first problem is that most of what you're doing on the podium to deliver awards or to participate in the Shaw has not been valuable. And most of those on the stage joined under that tradition thanking the parents, the family and the tribe of the film that won it, as if the occasion was an opportunity that could not be missed in a separate sermon
It happens every year, and it frustrates us every year, too. But what added to the problem was the fact that the Academy's desire to commit to three hours of television shows, in turn, became a pathetic concern. To that end, the Academy has cut out eight awards it has given each year at the ceremony. It decided to make it public in a separate declaration. But the problem remained because of the speed with which the performances, the paragraphs of the concert, and a cut from the filming of the attendees
And when Francis Ford Coppola's tribute, on the occasion of 50 years of his masterpiece The Godfather, showed the ceremony three quick passages intended to revive memory, but it went through no much excitement.
In a separate article in this newspaper, Coda reported as the second most important prospect of winning an Oscar this year. That's right after Dog Power. What happened was that Coda (who plays some of your first actors) actually dislodged all of his competitors, including Dog Power, and came out as the best film Oscar winner
That's another, legit, slap for a movie that I've predicted over the past few months would be "The Joker," which will win most of the Oscars it's nominated for. Dog Power actually lost most of his oscars. He was nominated for 12 awards, but came up with only one Oscar that director Jane Campion received. Among the most important awards her film was nominated for and did not receive an Oscar for Best Film (she went for "Coda," as mentioned), an Oscar for Best Actor (she was nominated for "Benedict Cumberbatch," but she went for Will Smith), and a Best Supporting Actress Award (she was won by Ariana Daboz won the Westside Store instead of Kirsten Dunst
When it came to the Best Supporting Actor award, Jesse Plemons and Cody Smit-McVeigh lost the opportunity to Troy Cotzer for "Coda"
The film also lost in the areas of best quoted screenplay, best soundtrack, best synthesized montage, and best shot, as we expected here days ago
Campion won the Best Director Award after Catherine Bigelow won The Hurt Locker in 2009. And Chloe Zaw about Nomadland last year. This win makes up for the fact that her film didn't win, while Coda's Oscar - winning Best Film seems free of reason because the film was not an Oscar - nominated Best Film.
The winner of the largest number of awards already was Dune, where he came out with six of them: best photography, best synthesizer, best special music, best visual effects, best production design, and best sound
The second one in this census is Koda. Besides winning an Oscar for Best Film, he came up with the Best Supporting Actor Award for Troy Cotsor and Best Screenplay (written by film director Sian Hader)
Then we find Tammy Faye's Eyes, and his heroine, Jessica Stein, was given the Best Actress award and then the makeup and hair designers were given a second award
One Oscar was won by "King Richard," "My Car" (Best Foreign Film Award), "Belfast" (Oscar for Best Original Screenplay), "No Time to Die" (Oscar for Best Song Written Specifically), and "West Sidestore" (Oscar for Best Supporting Actress). That's of course for the only Oscar side of The Power of a Dog
If the ceremony suffers from these administrative and technical problems, it does not mean that the ceremony was a failure on another level. While Jane Campion's winning record, which can be considered a tribute to feminist output, as presented above, Coda's Oscar-winning debut is the first major Oscar to be won by an Apple home streaming company. The same consideration would have been repeated if "Dog Power" had been the winning film, also being produced by another home streaming company (Netflix)
Another aspect of Koda's winning three awards is that it's the first film you've ever had (except for one actor). So it's recorded as the first film to give disabled people this artistic success. The film itself is not much more than average, but it's inspiring and special about its subject matter, and about actually choosing your actors, to play supporting roles
Jessica Steen wins Best Picture Oscar
And the lesbian was in turn present by Jessica Stein's best film Oscar. Not because she played the part, but because the movie (quoted as a real character), deals with gay AIDS users. She also attended lesbian Latin Ariana Debose's Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Steven Spielberg's "Westside Storey." She's known for her sexual orientation. But more importantly, the fact that Rita Moreno won the same award for "Westside Store" in 1961
Three concert hosts, Regina Hall, Wanda Sykes and Amy Schumer, also devoted their time to mocking the Florida governor's decision to block boys' education, which is a setting for opening up to sex (gay and straight) at such an early age
With all this, the political orientation of gay groups cannot be overlooked and the artistic traditions to satisfy all the doctrines of society, perhaps with the exception of the real doctrines that need actual attention
Eventually, the next few hours will reveal the concert's attendance on television. This percentage started falling within the United States years ago, and last year it reached its lowest level, attracting only 10 million and 400,000 spectators. 56 % less than the 2020 ceremony
